Comparative research on the world of horse racing and betting in South Africa, the Indian Ocean, and France

Sophie Chevalier is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Picardie Jules Verne in Amiens (France) and the head of a research centre, “Habiter le monde”. Her main interests are in economic life, consumption, urban anthropology, and the comparative history of anthropology. I have carried out research in Paris, London, Bulgaria, and Durban (in the last decade). In Durban, I work on the emergence of new middle classes, with a focus on the use of certain urban spaces (beach, shopping malls, apartment buildings, racecourses, betting shops).
Since 2014, I have undertaken research on the social world of horse-racing and betting, starting in Durban. I have surveyed various actors in the horse-racing industry, for example, jockeys, trainers, and bookmakers.  The circulation of horses, people, and betting between Durban and its goes far beyond its own region.
I could not resist adding French horse- (and greyhound-) racing to this focus on the global South. With a small research team, I have made an intensive study of gamblers’ practices in Northern France with the collaboration of France’s national Tote (the PMU). I am beginning to extend this research t building an oral archive of horse-race betting there.
