Thursday, March 12, @ 3 pm GMT (DakarTime)
11:00 am US EST – 10:00 am US CST – 8:00 am US PST – 6:00 pm Nairobi 4:00 pm Lagos – 5:00 pm Jo’burg

African women and girls playing at all levels of the sport, both within and outside of the continent. The expansion from 12 to 16 teams in the 16th edition of the Women’s African Cup of Nations, scheduled from 17 March to 3 April 2026 in Morocco, is evidence of this. Nevertheless, challenges persist. The delay of the 2024 WAFCON to July 2025 followed by the current uncertainty and expected postponement of WAFCON 2026 are reminders of the precarity confronting African women’s football. In this Sports Africa Live session Drs. Anima Adjepong and Chuka Onwumechili will delve into the promise and challenges of WAFCON 2026 and the wider implications for women’s football in Africa.

The author: Mark Hann

Mark Hann is an anthropologist and researcher whose work explores masculinity, sport, and social transformation in West Africa. Alongside his academic research, he has held various roles in international peacebuilding organisations.

Discussant: James Esson

Moderator:  Mari Engh

In Dakar, thousands of young men train daily on beaches, football pitches and sandy courtyards in pursuit of athletic success. Aspiring football players seek contracts in the lucrative leagues of the Global North, while hopeful wrestlers aim to captivate massive crowds as members of Senegal’s beloved national sport. Despite their differences – (European) football’s global appeal versus wrestling’s traditional roots – both sports demand immense effort and come with high social costs. Wrestling with Hope in Urban Senegal follows the journeys of these precarious athletes as they confront the realities of their aspirations, grappling with themes of masculinity, belief systems, and economic survival whilst navigating the complexities of a neoliberal landscape.

“It was a joy to read. It offers an original and nuanced analysis of the interplay between global and local sport industries and their impact on the lives of young men in a neoliberal Global South context.” •
James Esson, Queen Mary University

Wednesday, April 17, 2024 @ 3 pm GMT (Dakar time)

Zoom Registration  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_YfIu6BAbQfCDWEgiKVBX_Q

The global success of football icons like Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba and Mohamed Salah has fuelled the migratory projects of countless young men across the African continent who dream of following – literally and figuratively – in their footsteps. Drawing on over a decade of ethnographic research, African football migration captures and chronicles the aspirations, experiences and trajectories of those pursuing this highly prized form of transnational migration. In doing so, the book uncovers and traces the myriad actors, networks and institutions that affect the ability of young people across the continent to realise social mobility through football’s global production network. more>>
